SUGAR CANE
CAES Piura producers grow sugar cane within their farm idependently or as a family unit. Once harvested, they gather to begin the panela-making process. Sugar cane can be harvested year-round, but in the mountains of Piura, heavy rains between January and May make production and transport difficult. As a result, during these months, only 5% of annual production gets processed. Thus between July and December, when the rains have ceased, is the time production is most important.
BANANA
In the Sierra of Piura banana is grown in combination with coffee and other crops to make the most of shade banana trees offer. At CAES Piura, we want to bring added value by producing plantain chips and banana flour from the bananas so that producers who largely grow this type of crop, are able to earn additional income from their products. The banana variety is Monte Cristo, also known in the region as Big Nano.

PANELA CASTER
Once the producers get the panela, it is transported to the Montero Finished Product Centre. The technical team of CAES Piura completes a quality control process and then sieves the panela with the aim of eliminating any impurities. The panela from different producers or regions generally slightly varies, according to the percentage of dampness and colour, so we mix them to obtain a homogeneous product. Then it is packed and stored while waiting for shipment.
